Are "rent to own" homes and homes for lease the same thing? All of the rent to own homes in my area are on websites that make you either sign up to view them (which seems sketchy to me) or pay a fee to see them (which seems even sketchier). Are rent to own homes and homes for lease similar?

I am in the market to buy a rent to own home but I am confused about the different types of contracts available. I have heard of rent to own homes, lease purchase contracts, owner financing agreements, and land contracts. We at the time were waiting for our credit to imporve so we took a rent to own option. The house had a sign that said buy from owner when we bought it. Does the foreclosure of the home we rent constitute the landlord breaking the lease? We paid rent for all of the month, but halfway through, our landlord told us we would have 5 days to move out, because the house had been foreclosed, and the new owners want us out. The letter said we had no legal right to stay in the house, and that after 5 days, the sheriff would come in and take our belongings. He says he will refund the security deposit after we move out if there are no damages to the apt. Are we free from our lease obligations because he has broken the lease? Should we believe that he is really going to fix the damages on a house he does not own? Are we owed rent back from this month? I don't know what to do. I live in Louisiana if that helps. Moving to Nashville, TN in September and would like to rent-to-own a home.? I am relocating myself, my two kids and our cat to Nashville or a surrounding town. I've looked at apartments and some of them are nice and fit my budget, but we live in an apartment now and hate it!! looking to rent a house - how risky is this? (lease to own)? there are 2 signs in the front yard (a for SALE sign by realator and FOR RENT by owner) we called the owner to see if we could see the house and what the terms of the lease were. he said he was 4 months behind on the mortgage so the lease would be month to month (basically until we were kicked out due to foreclosure) but he said we could work out a lease-to-own option where the rent could go towards the purchase price. we really like the home but are not interested in purchasing it. we are thinking about doing the lease-to-own but unsure how to break out of it. is it easy if after a year or 2 decide we had enough we don't want to purchase you keep the payments as rent?
