I did that with my ex-wife and and we bought the house(she now lives in it). Anyway, I think it is a good thing for the "tenant" to live in the house for a few months to a year and hear any noises the house makes at night or during the day. You can examine the house top to bottom while you are there and see how much work might be needed. You can experience the neighborhood at night and any unusually noises. I highly recommend doing it if you have the opportunity.
