What does rent with the option to buy mean?

Does that mean that rent goes towards the purchase price or you rent until you're ready to buy and lose the rent money? This was in reference to a home. A house we saw in the paper says rent with the option to buy and I was just curious what it meant.

  1. A Rent a Center you pay in installments and you have an option to buy it. Check out Rent a Center on line that will explain it better.
  2. rent to but means your paying to buy it
  3. A little bit of both. The formulas are not the same everywhere. The fine prints one never reads should tell about that. It could go either way. Or it could be that you can buy at a preset price regardless of the rent.
