how to resolve lease agreement dispute?

My ex apartment-mate broke her lease agreement and did not pay for a couple of months of her rent after I had moved out. She did not indicate that she would leave the place before the lease ended. And I forgot to remove my name from the lease when I moved out of that apartment. Now she just wants to ignore the debt and collection calls. She intends not to pay. There were 4 of us who co-signed the lease. Can I pay 1/4th of the amount and get myself out of the mess? What options do I have?

  1. The leasehold is for the 4 of you as a whole, You can put ur 1/4 in but your name will still be down for owing them money until the full amount is payed
  2. No, the debt is not divided, it is a whole, as soon as it is paid in full you all are off the hook, until then you all owe it.
  3. read the lease. Somewhere, it says "jointly and severally liable" or similar. This means that the LL can sue EACH person for the WHOLE amount in an attempt to collect. So no one is free until the entirety is paid, unless you can work out a deal with the LL and get them to SIGN something releasing you from responsibility by paying your share.
